Free Trade in
Costa Rica
The export free zones of Costa Rica are the main aspects of the
economy that is a part of both its investment strategy and exports.
The Free trade zones are those areas of financial extra-
territoriality and customs. These are the particular facilities for
continuing economic operations that are based upon factors like the
imported inputs, manufacturing, raw materials, marketing or the
assembling of products and also services for the purpose of
exporting.
There are a number of advantages that are associated with those
countries that come under this Free Trade zone status. The
advantages are monetary incentives, easy operations, convenient
exchange and monetary facilities, electricity, close proximity to a
well educated and skilled labor force, the basic services, the
infrastructure required for the development of those companies that
are established under the Free Trade Zone status.
The advantages that Costa Rica enjoys are many due to this Free
Trade policy. The country is completely exempted from taxes that
have been levied on the assets and capital and also from the taxes
that are charged on profits. Costa Rica has got full control over
its foreign currency and a a stream lined process of documentation
has been established for both the processes of operation and
installation.
The Export Free Zone Corporation takes care to see that all the
investors are provided with the centralized services so that they
can very conveniently carry out the established and the necessary
processes. Besides the presence of this organization there are also
other factors that have given Costa Rica a great chance for
investments.
The primary reason for this is the location of Costa
Rica. It is situated right in the centre of the Western hemisphere
and this facilitates trade to a great extent. There is also another
factor and that is the high productivity rate of its labor force.
Education has always been a topmost national priority and it is free
and compulsory right up to the high school level.
It is due to this
fact that Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate of 94% among all
the other Third World countries. The Ticos are a highly disciplined
set of people, they learn things very fast and they also have good
administrative and working capabilities.
The Costa Rican Free Trade zones are those particular areas that are
outside the territory of the customs and it stands for the duty
customs, customs and the tariff only. All the other laws regarding
the location where you can put up your business get the benefits of
collection, the various exemptions and the laws given to the
exporting companies are applicable.
Each Free Trade zone is managed individually by one private
organization that is in turn supervised by the Free Trade Zone board
of management and control. It is this particular board that gives
the companies all the Free Trade zone operational permits and the
benefits as well. In Costa Rica this organization has two segments.
These are the PROCOMER, which is a Foreign Trade Marketing Company
and the COMEX, which is the Ministry of Foreign Trade.
